Macquarie Heads is located at the Northern end of Macquarie Harbour, Strahan West Coast Tasmania. To reach Macquarie Heads camping area, leave Strahan on the Ocean Road and travel a distance of approximately 4 kilometres. Turn left onto the C251. As you travel on this road, you will pass the Swan Basin Picnic Area after travelling a distance of app.7 kilometres. The campground at Macquarie Heads is 11 kilometres down this road. The campsite Macquarie Heads is reasonably large and has good shady, grassed sites next to the harbour. There is a resident caretaker on site, and this campground is suitable for caravans, campervans and motorhomes. A boat ramp, public toilet and dumping point are available and you are able to drive your 4WD onto Ocean Beach to fish or to drive along Ocean Beach. You must carry your own fresh water and firewood. There are picnic facilities at the nearby Swan Basin picnic area; stroll at your leisure on Ocean Beach and view the Lighthouse and Sarah Island or go fishing in Macquarie Harbour. Strahan is a very popular tourist destination in Tasmania and the starting point for the iconic Gordon River Cruise. This grassed, shady camping area is 15 km west of Strahan. Please Note: The Macquarie Heads Campground is extremely busy over Christmas / New Year, Easter, long weekends and school holidays. Make sure you have a backup plan in case there is no camping available during these periods, noting Strahan is a very long way from other major centres. There is a dump point at Macquarie Heads, the boat ramp is excellent and can accommodate large boats. There is also a jetty where the kids can go fishing. The Macquarie Heads campground is located at the Northern end of Macquarie Harbour Strahan. Access to Macquarie Heads camping is achieved by travelling along a gravel road, just out of Strahan that is clearly signposted. Unpowered campsites are available for a small daily fee (currently $6) - a caretaker is on site. Macquarie Heads campsites provide excellent grassed sites next to the Harbour and are suitable for tents, caravans, campervans and motorhomes.
