The free campground Oatlands Tasmania is accessible off Highway 1 when travelling between Hobart and Launceston. If travelling North to South, take the exit road signposted Oatlands. You will see an Esplanade Road that skirts Lake Dulverton, which is a popular recreational lake with locals. After app. 400 metres you will see a large grassed area on your left beside the lake. The area is flat and suitable for caravans, motorhomes, campervans and camper trailers. If arriving from the South, take the exit off Highway 1 (Midlands Hwy) signposted Oatlands and head through the main township until you see a road signposted to Lake Dulverton. Oatlands is a small historic town that is well known for a recently refurbished flour mill, Callington Mill which was originally built in 1837. Oatlands boasts the biggest collection of sandstone buildings in any village setting in Australia. The town’s authentic colonial character is characterised by 87 original sandstone buildings along the town’s main street. Some of the more significant buildings include the Oatlands gaol (1835), Commissariat’s store and watch house (1830s) and officers’ quarters (1830s). Callington Mill is the 3rd oldest windmill in Australia. Oatlands Tourism. The camping area at Oatlands is signposted from The Esplanade, which is accessible from the township of Oatlands or by turning off the Highway. You can have a shower at the local swimming pool ($2) or hotel; there is a 24 hr laundromat. The maximum stay here is 3 nights. Tent camping is not permitted in the area next to Lake Dulverton, however, there is a large overflow area on the top side of the road near Callington Mill. Please note both areas get quite full during busy holiday periods. As of the 2006 census, Oatlands had a population of just under 550. Oatlands is considered to have the largest number of colonial sandstone buildings in any town in Australia, and many of them were built by convict labour.
