Lake Augusta free camping, basic camping available at Lake Augusta boat ramp for fully self-contained vehicles only. Turn off the Lake Highway at Liawenee and drive on a gravel road for app. 13 kilometres until you come to the Lake Augusta Dam. No DOGS allowed. On the left-hand side of the road you will see the Thousand Lakes Lodge, turn right immediately before the dam and you will see 3 relatively flat sections at different elevations where you can camp overnight in fully self-contained vehicles. There are no facilities, and the area is prone to strong winds, heavy rain, and high snowfall. It is not an option to camp in a tent. People camping at Lake Augusta are generally fishermen camping before or after a day’s fishing, noting that there is a boat ramp at this location. It is possible to fish from the shore – a valid fishing license is required for all persons aged 14 years and older. A ranger from the nearby Liawenee office of Parks & Wildlife Tasmania patrols the area. There is a further area for camping on the Southern end of the Lake, immediately over the dam and on the right. However, the road is poor and subject to flooding at short notice so please take care. There are excellent opportunities for fishing and bushwalking in the area including at Lake Ada, Little Blue Lagoon, Tin Hut Lake, Lake Botsford, Lake Kay, O’Dells Lake, Twin Lagoon, Lake Flora, and Talinah Lagoon to name a few. Be sure to check the signboard at the turn-off to Lake Augusta from the Lake Highway at Liawenee as it provides important information on whether there are any road closures. The road to Lake Augusta is a little rough in places but no problems for 2WD vehicles. From Lake Augusta onwards, towards Lake Ada, there are roads that are only accessible by 4WD or ATVs. Please note all vehicles in this area must be licensed – no off-road vehicles allowed. Lake Augusta is a Hydro Tasmania lake so water levels may vary.
